German generals on the eastern front

General der Infanterie Paul Ludwig Hans von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg (Oct. 2nd 1847 - April 8th.1934), became commander of the  8th German army on august 20th 1914. He replaced von Prittwitz, who had been dismissed as he suggested a withdravel behind the river Vistula.

General Ludendorf, who had done very well during the fighting in Belgium, was appointed chief of staff for the 8th army under Hindenburg.

General Hoffmann. Chief of operations in the staff of the 8th army. He was the man, who developed the plan for Tannenberg.

General der Infanterie Hermann v. Francois (Jan. 31st - 1856 - Mai 15th - 1933). As the war began he was the commander of the I.German armycorps.

General der Kavallerie v. Mackensen (Dec. 6th - 1857 - Nov. 6th -1945) commander of the 17th German armycorps.

General der Artillerie von Scholtz (March 23rd - 1851 - Mai 2nd 1927) commander of the XX German armycorps.

General der Infanterie v. Below commander of the 1st. German reservecorps.

General Graf von der Goltz commanded the temporarily established corps, that carried his name.
